Swelling
Several factors contribute to swelling during pregnancy:
Hormonal changes: Fluctuations in hormones, particularly increased levels of progesterone, can lead to fluid retention.
Increased blood volume: During pregnancy, your body produces more blood to support the developing fetus, which can cause fluid to accumulate in tissues.
Pressure on blood vessels: The growing uterus can put pressure on the veins in the pelvic area, hindering the return of blood to the heart and leading to fluid buildup in the legs and feet.
Gravity: The effect of gravity can cause fluid to pool in the lower parts of the body, exacerbating swelling in the legs and feet.
Diet and hydration: Inadequate intake of water and excessive consumption of sodium can contribute to fluid retention and worsen swelling.
While mild swelling is normal, it’s essential to differentiate between normal swelling and potentially concerning swelling, which could be a sign of conditions such as preeclampsia. Warning signs to watch for include sudden or severe swelling, swelling in the hands and face, headaches, vision changes, abdominal pain, and rapid weight gain
Swelling during pregnancy, medically termed as edema, is a common occurrence due to increased blood volume and pressure on veins by the growing uterus. Hormonal changes cause the body to retain more water, leading to swelling in the hands, feet, ankles, and face. This condition typically peaks during the third trimester but can start earlier. To alleviate discomfort, pregnant individuals are advised to elevate their feet, stay hydrated, engage in regular exercise, and wear comfortable shoes. Severe or sudden swelling should be promptly reported to healthcare providers.
