Non-Stress Test (NST)

Non-Stress Test (NST)

A non-stress test (NST) is a prenatal test that’s commonly performed during the later stages of pregnancy to monitor the health and well-being of the fetus. It’s a simple and non-invasive procedure that typically takes about 20-30 minutes to complete.

During the test, the pregnant person will lie down comfortably while sensors are placed on their abdomen. These sensors are connected to a machine that records and displays two key pieces of information:

Fetal heart rate: The machine continuously monitors the baby’s heart rate, which can indicate how well the baby is doing.

Uterine contractions: The machine also records any contractions of the uterus, which could potentially affect the baby’s well-being.

The test is called a “non-stress” test because it doesn’t involve any stress being applied directly to the fetus. Instead, it relies on the natural movements and heart rate changes of the fetus in response to its own environment and any movements made by the mother.

During the test, the healthcare provider will look for certain patterns in the fetal heart rate. A healthy fetus will typically have a normal baseline heart rate with temporary accelerations in response to movement. These accelerations are a positive sign of fetal well-being.

If the test results show any concerning patterns, further evaluation may be needed. This could include additional monitoring, such as a biophysical profile (BPP), or other tests to assess the baby’s condition more closely.

Overall, non-stress tests are a valuable tool for monitoring fetal health and can help healthcare providers identify any potential issues that may require intervention to ensure the well-being of both the mother and the baby.

The Non-Stress Test (NST) during pregnancy monitors fetal heart rate and movement to assess fetal well-being. It’s typically performed in the third trimester, especially if there are concerns about fetal health. During the test, a fetal heart rate monitor is strapped to the abdomen, and movements are recorded. A normal result shows increased heart rate with fetal movement, indicating good oxygenation. An abnormal result may require further evaluation or intervention to ensure the baby’s health and well-being
