Laparoscopy Surgery

Laparoscopic surgery

Laparoscopy, also known as minimally invasive or keyhole surgery, is a surgical technique used to perform various procedures within the abdomen or pelvis using small incisions and specialized instruments. Here’s an explanation of laparoscopy surgery:

Procedure: During laparoscopy surgery, the surgeon makes small incisions, typically ranging from 0.5 to 1.5 centimeters in size, in the abdominal wall. Through these incisions, a thin, flexible tube called a laparoscope is inserted. The laparoscope contains a light source and a camera, which allows the surgeon to view the inside of the abdomen or pelvis on a monitor in real-time.

Visualization: The camera attached to the laparoscope provides high-definition images of the internal organs, allowing the surgeon to visualize and access the area of interest with precision. The images help guide the surgical instruments and ensure accurate placement during the procedure.

Specialized Instruments: In addition to the laparoscope, the surgeon may insert other specialized instruments through additional small incisions to perform the necessary surgical tasks. These instruments may include graspers, scissors, probes, and energy devices for cutting or cauterizing tissues.

Gas Insufflation: To create a working space inside the abdomen and improve visibility, carbon dioxide gas is typically infused into the abdominal cavity before or during the procedure. This process, known as insufflation, helps lift the abdominal wall away from the internal organs, reducing the risk of injury and allowing for better maneuverability of the instruments.

Types of Procedures: Laparoscopy surgery can be used to perform a wide range of procedures, including:

Diagnostic laparoscopy: To visualize and assess the abdominal or pelvic organs, diagnose conditions such as endometriosis or pelvic inflammatory disease, and obtain tissue samples for biopsy.

Therapeutic laparoscopy: To treat various conditions, such as removing ovarian cysts, performing tubal ligation (sterilization), treating ectopic pregnancy, repairing hernias, or removing the gallbladder (laparoscopic cholecystectomy).

Gynecological procedures: Laparoscopy is commonly used in gynecology for procedures such as hysterectomy (removal of the uterus), myomectomy (removal of uterine fibroids), and treatment of conditions like ovarian cysts or adhesions.
