Diagnostic Tests

Diagnostic Tests

Here’s an overview of some common diagnostic tests conducted in outpatient departments along with a brief explanation of their procedures:

Blood Tests (Blood Draw or Venipuncture): A healthcare professional cleans the skin surface, usually in the arm, with an antiseptic solution. They then insert a small needle into a vein to draw a sample of blood. The blood sample is collected in tubes and sent to a laboratory for analysis.

X-rays: X-ray imaging involves exposing a specific part of the body to a small dose of ionizing radiation to produce images of the internal structures. The patient is positioned appropriately by a radiologic technologist, and then the X-ray machine captures the images. Patients may need to hold their breath briefly to minimize motion blur.

Ultrasound (Sonography): Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of the inside of the body. A gel is applied to the skin to ensure good contact between the skin and the ultrasound transducer. The transducer is then moved over the area being examined, emitting sound waves and capturing the returning echoes to create images.

MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging): MRI uses a powerful magnetic field and radio waves to generate detailed images of the body’s internal structures. Patients lie on a table that slides into the MRI machine. It’s important to remain still during the procedure to avoid blurring the images. Some patients may receive contrast dye through an IV to enhance the clarity of certain structures.

CT Scan (Computed Tomography): CT scans use X-rays and a computer to create detailed cross-sectional images of the body. Patients lie on a table that moves through a doughnut-shaped machine. The machine emits X-ray beams from various angles, and detectors measure the amount of radiation absorbed. Contrast dye may be injected into a vein to enhance the visibility of certain tissues or blood vessels.

ECG (Electrocardiogram): An ECG records the electrical activity of the heart. Small electrodes are placed on the chest, arms, and legs. These electrodes are connected to a machine that detects and records the electrical signals produced by the heart as it beats. The procedure is painless and typically takes just a few minutes.
